The Northern Ireland Protocol, known as the « Irish backstop », was an annex to the November 2018 draft agreement outlining provisions to avoid a hard border in Ireland after the United Kingdom`s withdrawal from the European Union. The Protocol contained a safety net provision to deal with circumstances in which satisfactory alternative arrangements have yet to enter into force at the end of the transitional period. This project has been replaced by a new protocol which will be described as follows. In addition, according to von der Leyen, Britain is throwing its reputation in the wind by not respecting an agreement signed in December. Today, I signed the UK`s withdrawal agreement from the EU on 31 January, respecting the democratic mandate of the British people. This signature insinuates a new chapter in our nation`s history. pic.twitter.com/IaGTeeL2is Immediately after the announcement of a revised withdrawal agreement on 17 October 2019, the Labour Party, the Liberal Democrats and the DUP announced that they could not support the new agreement. The Withdrawal Agreement also contains provisions allowing the UK to leave the Convention establishing the Statute for the European Schools until the end of the last academic year of the transition period, i.e. at the end of the 2020-2021 spring semester, through the Convention and the accompanying rules on accredited European Schools. The signatures mark a new stage in the ratification process after Parliament passed the Brexit law earlier this week. The European Parliament will vote on the agreement on 29 January.
The new Political Declaration sets the framework for the future relationship between the European Union and the United Kingdom and reflects the government`s willingness to conclude an ambitious, broad, deep and flexible partnership on trade and economic cooperation with the EU, with a focus on a free trade agreement with the EU, in addition to security agreements and other areas of cooperation. Representatives of the UK and the EU signed the Withdrawal Agreement. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has insisted that the chances of a future trade deal are diminishing by the day and told EU lawmakers that British Prime Minister Boris Johnson`s plans to break parts of the withdrawal agreement between Britain and the EU weigh even more heavily on those hopes. The agreement was revised as part of the Johnson Ministry`s renegotiation in 2019. The amendments adapt about 5% of the text. The Brexit Withdrawal Agreement, officially entitled « Withdrawal Agreement of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland from the European Union and the European Atomic Energy Community » is a treaty signed on 24 January 2020 between the European Union (EU), Euratom and the United Kingdom , which sets out the conditions for the Withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the EU and Euratom. The text of the treaty was published on 17 October 2019 and is a renegotiated version of an agreement published six months earlier. . . .
